This standard specifies test procedures for determining the ability of a fiber optic cable to withstand bending at low and high temperatures. Evaluation of this ability is made by visual examination and by either measuring the change in optical transmittance or monitoring fiber continuity.

Four test procedures are included in this standard:

a) Procedure I: A procedure to test cable samples for physical damage and optical loss increase using a single-end configuration;

b) Procedure II: A procedure to test cable samples for physical damage and optical loss increase using a double-end configuration;

c) Procedure III: A procedure to test cable samples for physical damage and fiber breakage for testing to the original issue (ANSI/EIA RS-455-37);

d) Procedure IV: A procedure to test cable samples only for physical damage, in accordance with UL 444. Note that UL 444 testing would, normally, only be required for hybrid cables that contain both optical fiber and electrical conductors.

Using one of these procedures, all types of fiber optic cables can be tested for bending performance at various temperature extremes.
