BS 7273-4:2015 gives recommendations for the design, installation,commissioning and maintenance of electrical control arrangements for actuationof mechanisms that unlock, release or open doors in the event of fire. It appliesto all aspects of the interface between these mechanisms and a fire detectionand fire alarm system, including interfaces that incorporate acoustic couplingand radio transmission. It does not recommend whether the above mechanismsshould, or should not, be used in any given premises, or in any particularcircumstances.The interface arrangements to which this part of BS 7273 applies, include anysuch arrangements that are designed in the event of fire to:
  • release fire-resisting doors that are normally held in the open position;
  • unlock doors that are normally locked; or
  • cause powered sliding doors to open.
This British Standard does not apply to electrically controlled systems that formpart of a smoke venting system. Fire resisting shutters and active fire curtainbarrier assemblies are also outside the scope of this British Standard.This part of BS 7273 does not generally apply to the equipment that holds,releases, locks or unlocks the doors, or that facilitates the opening of poweredsliding doors.NOTE 1 Recommendations are given, where appropriate, for the standards towhich some of this equipment needs to conform.This part of BS 7273 does not apply to products used within the fire detectionand fire alarm system that initiate the signal to actuate the door locking orrelease mechanisms, nor to aspects of the fire detection and fire alarm systemconcerned with its primary function to give warning in the event of fire.NOTE 2 Recommendations for the design, installation, commissioning andmaintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems are given in BS 5839-1, whichrefers normatively to BS 7273 for the interface between a fire detection and firealarm system and other fire protection systems and equipment.The scope of this part of BS 7273 is shown diagrammatically in Figure 1.Cross References:BS 4422BS 4678-4BS 5839-1:2013BS 5839-3BS 5839-6:2013BS 6724BS 7671BS 7846BS EN 54-2BS EN 54-11:2001BS EN 1155BS EN 1527:2013BS EN 12209:2003BS EN 16005BS EN 61386-1BS EN 60839-11-1BS EN 50133-2-1BS EN 60702-1IEC 60702-1BS EN ISO 7010:2012ETSI EN 300 220-1ETSI EN 300 220-2ETSI EN 300 220-3BS 476-22BS 5266-1BS 5266-8 BS EN 50172BS 8220BS EN 1838BS EN 14846BS EN 14637 Building Regulations 2010Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012Building (Scotland) Regulations 2004Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 Fire (Scotland) Act 2005Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010Equality Act 2010Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations 200689/336/EEC1999/5/ECBS EN ISO 9001
