These requirements cover power supplies having ac or dc input voltage ratings above 1000 V, up to 38 kV, and ac or dc output voltage ratings up to 38 kV.

These power supplies may have one or more circuits that are classified as safety extra low voltage (SELV).

These requirements cover equipment intended for use in ordinary locations in accordance with the National Electrical Code.

These requirements also cover open type, or partially enclosed power supplies intended to be installed in equipment where the overall assembly is investigated using this outline of investigation, or another applicable standard for medium voltage equipment.
