Smart infrastructure can use distributed fiber optic sensors to monitor strain, vibration, and temperature. The standard expands the monitoring capability to include corrosion, crack detection and growth. Issues being addressed include providing power to remote sensing systems and how these sensing systems interface with both wired and wireless local area networks. Monitored infrastructure includes bridges, tunnels, dams, buildings, rail lines, power lines, and pipelines.
