The purpose of this standard is to establish nationally recognized quality requirements and package sizes for paints and inks used for art experiences in schools, museums, camps, homes, and other places and to provide producers, distributors, and users with a basis for common understanding of the characteristics of these products.

This standard provides minimum requirements for materials, toxicity, coarse particle content, characteristics, working qualities, preservative effectiveness, size, and packaging of paints and inks for art education.
